At our school, learning is not just about sitting still and listening. It is about experiencing, exploring, and engaging the whole body. Our approach is engagement first and then attainment.
Sensory learning allows children to use touch, movement, sight, sound, and even smell to understand the world around them.
The images above show pupils fully immersed in sensory exploration feeling textures like foam, engaging with messy play, exploring objects through touch, and even using their sense of smell. These are not just “fun activities”; they are essential foundations for learning and development.

Sensory learning is the foundation of all development. Before children can focus, communicate, or succeed academically, they need to feel calm, regulated, and connected to their bodies. Through activities that involve touch, movement, and exploration such as messy play, textures, and hands-on experiences children build essential brain connections that support attention, behaviour, and learning. A
s shown in the Pyramid of Learning, sensory skills sit at the base, meaning they must be strong before higher-level skills like reading, writing, and concentration can develop.
At TAPS ARP, we prioritise sensory experiences because when children feel secure and regulated, they are ready to engage, communicate, and learn.
