Our ARP pupils have been taking part in an exciting Tuck Shop project, designed to bring learning to life through meaningful, practical experiences. The pupils have enjoyed preparing snacks, following visual instructions, serving customers, selecting products and using money in a safe and supportive environment.
Before opening the shop, pupils helped to prepare simple food items, including making sandwiches and creating their own ice-cream-themed artwork. They practised following a sequence, using kitchen utensils safely, making choices and completing tasks as independently as possible. Visual recipes, communication boards and adult modelling enabled every pupil to participate at their own level.
When working in the Tuck Shop, pupils developed important early employability skills by taking on different roles, such as:
- Organising and displaying products
- Greeting and communicating with customers
- Listening to and completing an order
- Using a till and handling coins
- Giving items to customers and exchanging money
- Waiting, taking turns and working alongside others
- Cleaning and tidying the work area
The project supported learning across the curriculum. Pupils used their communication skills to request, comment, answer questions and interact with others. They developed their mathematical understanding by recognising coins, counting items, comparing prices and experiencing real-life transactions. They also strengthened their fine-motor skills through spreading, cutting, opening packets, pouring drinks and handling money.
Most importantly, the Tuck Shop helps prepare our pupils for greater independence and adulthood. Through regular opportunities to practise functional skills, pupils learn how to make choices, complete everyday tasks, follow workplace routines and contribute to their school community. These experiences help build confidence, responsibility, resilience and an understanding that their skills and contributions are valued.
The enthusiasm shown by our pupils has been wonderful to see. The Tuck Shop has provided a fun and purposeful way for them to develop skills that will support them throughout school and into their future lives.
