Whispers, Wonders, and the Fire That Couldn’t Win

The visit to St Paul’s Cathedral turned the Great Fire of London topic into a real-life adventure. The children were amazed to learn that although the original cathedral was destroyed in 1666, a few remarkable treasures survived the flames—most famously the statue of John Donne, which was found standing almost untouched among the ruins. Even more incredible, the statue still shows him wrapped in a burial shroud, just as he chose to be remembered, making it one of the only monuments to survive the fire almost exactly as it was before.

Climbing the great dome felt like a quest, with hundreds of winding steps leading to breathtaking views across London. Inside, whispers became magic in the Whispering Gallery, where even the quietest sound travels mysteriously along the curved walls. A lively treasure hunt added to the excitement, as the children searched high and low for hidden clues. The day was filled with curiosity, laughter, and moments of wonder—history didn’t just feel real, it felt alive.
