This week, our learning focused on understanding emotions, using the core text The Colour Monster. The children engaged in a range of interactive, sensory, and collaborative activities to help them recognise, express, and talk about their feelings.
We began each session with a sensory movement break, where the children enjoyed music and action songs. This helped them regulate, engage, and get ready for learning in a fun and motivating way.

The children worked in small groups to sequence the story of The Colour Monster, helping them develop their understanding of narrative structure. They collaborated with their peers to retell the story and then created their own versions, exploring a range of feelings and personal experiences. These activities supported the development of communication skills, teamwork, and imagination, while also reinforcing key emotional vocabulary.

In other group activities, the children matched emotions to words and visuals, helping to build their emotional literacy. They also sorted objects into “emotion jars,” linking different colours and items to specific feelings, and practised identifying how they feel and sharing this with others. Alongside this, the children developed their fine motor skills through hands-on tasks, including practising cutting skills and taking part in structured activities that supported coordination and independence.

To end the sessions, the children took part in karaoke activities, where they practised reading familiar words, developed confidence in their communication skills, and expressed themselves through music and performance.

Have a great weekend
