The Benefits of Vertical Writing for Child Development

At Thomas Arnold ARP, we incorporate vertical writing into our learning activities to support children’s motor and cognitive development. Writing on an upright surface, such as a whiteboard or wall-mounted paper, encourages proper posture, strengthens core muscles, and enhances wrist stability, all of which are essential for handwriting readiness. This method also promotes bilateral coordination, requiring children to use both hands—one for writing and the other for stabilising the paper—improving overall dexterity.

Additionally, vertical writing fosters visual tracking skills, which are critical for reading and letter formation. By engaging in this activity, children naturally develop a stronger pencil grip, better control of fine motor movements, and increased endurance for writing tasks. Incorporating vertical surfaces into daily practice is a fun, engaging way to build foundational skills that will benefit children in all areas of their learning journey.
