Our Year 5 mathematicians have been developing their understanding of place value while learning to multiply 1, 2, 3 and 4-digit numbers, as well as decimals, by 10.
To bring the learning to life, the children became the digits! Holding number cards, they physically moved one place to the left to demonstrate how each digit’s value changes when multiplying by 10. This practical approach helped them see that the number becomes ten times greater, while reinforcing the importance of each digit’s position.
The children also explored the role of the placeholder zero when multiplying whole numbers by 10, using their understanding of place value to explain and justify their calculations. It was fantastic to see them using a hands-on approach to build confidence and deepen their mathematical understanding!
