In the ARP, Maths learning is meaningful, practical, and fully embedded into everyday experiences. We focus on functional maths, helping pupils apply number skills to real-life situations such as counting foods, sorting healthy ingredients, and making simple choices related to diet and wellbeing.

Our approach is strongly sensory-based, using hands-on materials, visuals, and movement to make learning accessible for every child. Pupils explore numerals, quantities, shapes, and patterns through touch, sight, sound, and active play. This week, linked to our Healthy Diet and Food topic, children engaged with fruit visuals, counting baskets, food sorting trays, and sensory surfaces to build early number understanding.

We believe that learning can happen anywhere, not only at a desk. Pupils worked across different environments including the classroom, the hall, outdoor spaces, and the sensory room allowing them to learn in the spaces where they feel most regulated and ready.

Most importantly, we follow the child’s lead. By tuning into each pupil’s interests, communication style, and sensory needs, we create maths experiences that are engaging, motivating, and truly meaningful. Through this approach, children develop confidence, independence, and a positive relationship with learning.
