Steve McQueen

For Black History Month, year 6’s person of interest was the artist, and film director Steve McQueen. Before becoming the first black director to win a Best Picture Oscar for 12 Years a Slave,  McQueen was a talented artist. The children explored one of his pieces of art – Portrait as an Escapologist (2006) and recreated it using mixed media.

McQueen was heavily influenced by Andy Warhol’s Blue Elvis, so the children used a similar colour palette when creating their artwork.
