This month in English, our pupils have been exploring the much-loved story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Through a highly visual, sensory and hands-on approach, the children have been learning to sequence and order key events from the story.


Using large story props, food cards and a “caterpillar feeding box,” pupils matched the foods to the correct day and placed them into the caterpillar in the right order. This playful, interactive method supports comprehension, builds early literacy skills, and helps children understand how stories follow a clear beginning, middle and end.



By engaging with the story through touch, movement and repetition, pupils developed their ability to recall events, follow a sequence, and use key vocabulary linked to days of the week and food. Our child-led approach allows each learner to participate in a way that suits their communication and sensory needs, making the story meaningful, memorable and fun.
