ARP Visit to the Community Garden: Learning Through Nature

On a sunny day this week, our ARP learners took to the local community garden for a hands-on, sensory-rich outdoor learning experience that tied perfectly into our topic of Growing. This was more than just a trip out. It was a practical learning adventure full of discovery, skill-building, and smiles.

Learning About Road Awareness
The day started with a purposeful walk. Donning their high-visibility vests, our students practised road safety and awareness skills as they walked with adults to the garden site. This supported their understanding of public spaces, crossing safely, and moving as a group with confidence, valuable life skills for independence.

Digging, Planting, and Vocational Skills
At the garden, learners rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into the soil! With adult support, they learned how to use garden tools like forks and spades safely, removed turf, and prepared raised beds. These practical tasks supported gross motor development and introduced basic vocational skills like turn-taking, following sequences, and tool use.

Exploring Insects and Nature
One of the unexpected highlights of the day was finding a little green caterpillar wriggling in the soil. This became an exciting, teachable moment about insects and their role in our environment. The children were fascinated, and it sparked curiosity about the life cycle of plants and bugs. A beautiful example of learning sparked by the natural world.

Why It Matters
This outing was about more than gardening. It promoted inclusion, sensory exploration, pre-vocational learning, and engagement with the wider community. Experiences like this help our learners connect classroom concepts to real-world environments while building confidence and joy.

A huge thank you to our staff and students for their energy and teamwork. The garden is only just the beginning—we can’t wait to watch it grow alongside our learners!

Have a great weekend
