In their topic – Time to Rebuild, year 6 have been learning about the new towns that were built around Britain, after the Second World War.
The children discovered that two million homes were bombed, during the conflict – and the families that they housed needed somewhere to live. The temporary solution was prefab homes – these were manufactured in factories and built on the ground where the destroyed homes had been. The lasting solution was to build new towns, like Basildon, Harlow and Hatfield.
The children discovered how the creation of new towns was different to how towns had developed over time.
Year 6 were then set the task of creating a new town of their own on a piece of land. They had to consider:
- housing
- businesses
- services
- leisure
- transport
They should be extremely proud of the new towns that they produced.
