Well done you have almost completed your letter to Captain Tom. Today I would like you to reread your letter and make sure it makes sense. Is there anymore adjectives you could include? Are you happy with your final piece? Have you included all your punctuation?

When you have finished checking your work and have read it to an adult, please draw a picture of Captain Tom completing 100 laps of his garden.

You can create a birthday card for Captain Tom wishing him a happy 100th birthday.

If you wish to send your letter or card to Captain Tom, pop them in an envelope and write his name on the front; the post men know where to send it so you don’t need to include an address.

Arts and Crafts

We would like you to do some research and find out about different festivals celebrated around the world in May. One of the most interesting festivals that I found out about is:

The Feast of San Domenico in the Italian town of Cocullo is also known as the Festival of the Snakes (Festa dei Serpari). Cocullo is tiny town, with a population of fewer than 300 people, but thousands turn out to see the San Domenico procession in early May. As they have for nearly a thousand years, villagers carry the statue of San Domenico, covered in snakes, from the church and through town.

San Domenico was a Benedictine monk who lived in the 10th and 11th centuries, and was said to be able to cure people of snake bites and rabies. For the annual procession, villagers capture nonvenomous snakes, and many of them are laid on the statue. Other snakes are carried in the procession, as well as the traditional bread made to resemble a snake eating its own tail. The snakes are released after the ritual. The Snake Festival happens on the first Thursday in May, which this year was on May 5. See a video of the procession here:

Once you have chosen a festival we would like you to create a poster to share all of the facts that you have found out about it.
